Select Board Reviewing Bids and Budget Allocation for Critical Building Repairs
Brookfield, October 20, 2023 – In a crucial meeting held last night the Select Board gathered to address a pressing issue concerning the state of the local police station. Police Chief, Michael Blanchard, delivered a presentation outlining the necessity of extensive repairs to the Brookfield Police Station’s infrastructure. The heart of the matter, as Chief Blanchard explained, was the removal and replacement of insulation and membrane crucial to the building’s structural integrity.
Chief Blanchard began his presentation by emphasizing that the required repairs went beyond simple insulation for temperature control; it was essential for preserving the overall structure of the building. He disclosed that several quotes had been obtained, ranging from $90,000 to $120,000. However, the Chief shared an encouraging update with the board, revealing a lower quote of $63,280, which would include the removal and installation of a foam insulation system with an impressive R38 rating. Importantly, Chief Blanchard pointed out that this foam insulation would adhere securely to the roof, eliminating the issues associated with the previously used “loose” insulation.
During the meeting, Select Board member Beth Coughlin raised an important point. Given the significant cost of the project, it would be necessary to adhere to the town’s financial regulations and send the project out for competitive bidding. This move aims to ensure transparency and fairness in selecting the best contractor for the job.
In response to this requirement, the Select Board collectively reviewed the town’s budget line items to assess where the necessary funds could be allocated. The discussion touched upon various possibilities, highlighting the importance of maintaining the police station’s structural integrity while adhering to fiscal responsibility.
In the end, the Select Board decided to place this matter on the agenda for a follow-up meeting scheduled for next Thursday. October 26th at 12:30 PM. This meeting will be open to the public, providing an opportunity for community members to voice their opinions and concerns regarding the project. After the public discussion, the Select Board will convene an executive session to address another matter of importance.
The town’s decision-makers remain committed to upholding the safety and functionality of the Brookfield Police Station while ensuring that the project is carried out transparently and cost-effectively. Community members are encouraged to attend the upcoming meeting to contribute to the discussion and stay informed about the progress of this critical infrastructure project. In the meantime, the Select Board will continue to explore budget options, including the possibility of using funds from the Free Cash account as a worst-case scenario.
